Motivation For Cosmetic Formulators
2 Habits Of Successful Cosmetic Formulators
To thrive as a formulator, you have to dedicate at least 2 hours a week to formulation.
If you don’t have any ingredients called for in any of our formulation projects, feel free to substitute it with similar ingredients.
For example if a formula calls for propanediol 1,3, you can substitute it with same amount of glycerin.
Keep in mind that the best Cosmetic Formulator are not necessarily the ones who studied chemistry or even cosmetic science, the best ones are the ones who dedicate more time to cosmetic formulation. The more time you dedicate, the better you are at it.
Set out a flexible schedule for yourself and dedicate to it.
If your plan is to start a beauty brand, you have to invest more time weekly.
As a dedicated cosmetic chemist, I make a product every week.
That is how dedicated I’m to cosmetic formulation.
In addition to my on the job experience, the one thing that has helped me is my dedication to cosmetic formulation.
A senior colleague once said, dedication is a deadly commitment to a goal or project. It helps you stay focused and in turn lead to prosperity.
Note: Please don’t keep a strict formulation schedule to prevent stress and lack of interest.
Another habit every formulator must have is learning about ingredients.
You have to take your time to learn about major cosmetic formulation ingredients and how they are used in formulation. The best thing you can learn about them is their properties.
For example, if you want to make acne care products, you want to stick with non comedogenic ingredients like Shea Butter, Safflower Oil, Hemp Seed Oil,etc
If you are making products for mature and dry skin, you want to use heavier and slow absorbing carrier oils like Avocado, Olive, etc.
If you want to make product for oily skin, choose light and fast absorbing carrier oils like Camellia Seed, Grapeseed Oil, Safflower oils, etc.
This is included in our Formulation Crash course – All Users have access to it. Click here to see the curriculum for the course and go through them one by one to learn more about ingredients used in cosmetic formulation and why they are used.
I hope this short article has motivated you to dedicate more time to cosmetic formulation.
